I am Alberto De Virgiliis, an architect with four years of practice inside studios in Italy and abroad. I have worked at the scale of a retail interior and at the scale of a masterplan, in BIM and in computational modelling, staying with a project through detailed design and onto the building site. This site collects the work in three groups: what has been built, what was proposed, and what I keep researching on the side.
Projects delivered and open to the public, from retail interiors in Paris and Zurich to installations produced with manufacturers. On these I have followed production drawings, contractors and site work.
Feasibility studies, competitions and design proposals, at building and urban scale. Work on existing and listed buildings, developed with structural and services engineers.
Images, models and experiments carried on alongside the projects. They test ideas that later find their way into the work, and they keep the tools sharp.

Inside a studio the depth of involvement changes with the project and with the team. What has stayed constant is that I have never worked on one phase in isolation. Understanding what happens before and after the drawing I am producing is what lets me govern it.
(01) Listening and brief
Understanding what the client needs, what the place already contains and what constraints are real. The brief is rarely complete at the start, and reading what is missing from it is part of the work.
(02) Concept
Testing the possibilities that the constraints leave open, in models, drawings and images, until one holds together programme, site and budget.
(03) Design development
Bringing the concept to a resolved design: BIM models, drawing sets, regulatory documents, coordination with structural and services engineers.
(04) Technical documentation
Production drawings and specifications, developed directly with contractors and manufacturers. This is where a design is either confirmed or has to be reconsidered.
(05) Site
Following the work as it is built, resolving what the drawings could not anticipate, and checking that what arrives at full size is what was designed.
