In 2017 fire took around 124,000 hectares of woodland across Italy, and Abruzzo was among the worst hit regions. The installation answers that with a box: black, burnt on the outside, closed. What it holds can only be entered by looking. Openings let people find the inside from different positions, one at a time, so the thing has to be walked around and searched for. The forest is put where you cannot reach it, which is close to what a fire leaves behind.

We designed it and then built it ourselves, by hand, for the European Researchers' Night at the Aurum in Pescara. I was a student and part of the association at the time. Cutting, burning and assembling the panels was the part where the idea had to survive contact with the material, and some of what the piece ended up being came out of that.
