Three new pieces have entered the cathedral in Montepulciano: an altar, an ambo and a cathedra. The building itself remains unchanged. The competition entry focuses on the presbytery alone, positioning the three pieces in dialogue with the baptismal font and the congregation. This allows people to move around and participate without the space losing its significance when it is empty. The materials speak for themselves. The earth tones are borrowed from the Tuscan hills around the town. The altar is a monolithic slab with a vein of gold running across it.

I managed the relationship with the artist, Edoardo Piermattei, and the resulting material choices, and produced the renderings. These images served two purposes: first, to understand how the pieces would be constructed and how they would fit into the nave; and second, to present the proposal. We deliberately made them ethereal, with the cathedral dissolving into light, so that the viewer's attention is drawn to the liturgical intervention against the backdrop of the church rather than within it.
